ASPARTAME: Sweet and Deadly

Well, we have another deadly scandal staring us in the faces now, right along with dental mercury toxicity and flouride water treatments-the aspartame “mass poisoning of the world” scandal. The world is now swimming in this highly toxic chemical-over 90 countries are selling it as NutraSweet, Equal, or Spoonful. Over half of all Americans now consume it on a regular basis. The really sad thing is that both the FDA and the EPA have known about its potential, and now realized, detrimental effects for years and have ignored them under political pressure and kickbacks from the companies producing this product. The FDA is deluged with complaints about aspartame, five times more than it receives about MSG, sulfite, saccarine or any other additive. By it’s own admission, more than 80 percent of all the food additive complaints the FDA receives are related to aspartame. And though many of our respected scientists have requested a hearing on the safety of aspartame, the FDA has refused to do so. It has never even asked that quantities of the substance by put on labels.
Dr. H. J. Roberts, in his excellent and important book written in 1990, Aspartame: Is it Safe?, describes his study of 557 people with aspartame reactions, many of them his own patients. The symptoms they suffered, including headache, dizziness, anxiety, depression, memory loss, confusion, visual loss and convulsive seizures, insomnia, heart palpitations, joint pain and vomiting-were remarkably similar to those described by the first 3,326 aspartame consumers who filed complaints with the FDA.
In 1994 a study was done of hundreds of airline pilots who had complained to the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network. This study revealed that in several cases, there were incidences of visual disturbance, memory dysfunction, disorientation and grand mal seizures while in the cockpit. Would you want to fly with a pilot who was drinking Diet Pepsi en route? I wouldn’t!!!!!
Why is there such a problem with aspartame? Well, other than the fact that it is produced from methanol, when the temperature of aspartame exceeds 89 degrees, the wood alcohol (methanol) in aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.)
The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis. Thus, people are diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis when, in fact, they are often suffering from aspartame toxicity. If they had been taken off aspartame, their symptoms would, in many cases, have disappeared.
Systemic lupus erythematosis has become almost as common as multiple sclerosis and the major culprits appear to be Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. The systemic lupus appears to be triggered by aspartame. The victim usually does not know that the aspartame is the culprit and continues with the diet drinks, thus aggravating the lupus to such a degree that it can be life-threatening. Chronic methanol toxicity from diet drinks usually diagnosed as something else, has similar symptoms as lupus and MS. It is usually found that the patient drinks three to four 12-oz cans of diet soda per day.
When patients are taken off aspartame, those with systemic lupus may improve, but they will not be cured. The damage has been done and the disease cannot be reversed. However, in “MS” cases, the results are often dramatic, almost miraculous looking. In these cases, the symptoms are created by chronic methanol toxicity and they may disappear completely with removal of aspartame from the diet.
Since 1990 as research has increased, aspartame side effects have also been discovered to include blindness, tinnitus, numbness in the extremities, muscle spasms, slurred speech, and vertigo. So many of these behaviors are similar to MS, Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumor or neurosis and thus, doctors are misdiagnosing all the time.
As it relates to brain tumors, however, there has been a sharp increase in the incidence of brain tumors over the last 40 years. In the last 40 years there has also been an increase in the use of jet travel, television, aspartame, and Kleenex. But, unlike those other modern conveniences, there is solid evidence that points to aspartame in the origins of the modern epidemic of brain cancer.
There was actually an early study done to test the safety of aspartame, and it disclosed a high incidence of brain tumors in the animals fed what would soon become Nutrasweet. The study was done by the G.D. Searle Co, that would be selling Monsanto Corporation’s creation (aspartame). The Searle Co. found there was a 3.75 percent incidence of brain tumors in the rats fed aspartame and zero percent in the control rats-these type of tumors are very rare in rats. It is so rare that this incidence represents a 25 times higher incidence than would be expected in rats. And the cancer rate was dose related-the more they consumed, the more cancer.
Soon after the link was verified, these studies were discontinued, buried and damage control was called in. The tumors were called, “spontaneous,” and the FDA went along with the studies, even though they knew them to be so badly flawed to the point of fraud and gross incompetence. The FDA then approved Nutrasweet.
Dr. H. J. Roberts has written another book. He is a diabetic specialist and now a world expert on aspartame. His new book is entitled Defense Against Aszheimer’s Disease. He talks about the escalation of Alzheimer’s as a result of aspartame poisoning. Hospice nurses are reporting that women are being admitted at 30 years of age with Alzheimer’s disease!!
Another major problem that is becoming associated with aspartame consumption, according to Dr. Roberts, is the high potential for birth defects in children conceived while the mother has been consuming aspartame. A breakdown product of aspartame metabolism, phenylalanine, concentrates in the placenta, causing mental retardation in the baby.
This book is very helpful in identifying the problems that may be associated with aspartame, and is definitely for anybody interested in becoming more educated about aspartame and other toxins.
Needless to say, if a food label says, “sugar-free,” don’t purchase it until you read the label. It probably contains aspartame. If you have foods in your pantry containing Equal, NutraSweet of Spoonful, get rid of them. Did you know that even ants won’t touch the stuff?
